中国春节期间，我在飞机上遇到一个高二的中国学生，刚刚参加完美国大学游项目。我问他出国留学想学什么，他说想学英国文学，问题是父母想让他学金融专业。

I met a Senior 2 on Air China returningfrom a U.S. college tour during Spring Festival. I asked him what he wanted tostudy when he goes abroad for college. He said, “I want to study English literature. The problem is that my parentswant me to study finance.”

河北省的小逸是幸运的，他已经学习英语和金融两年了但是他不会选择自己的专业。跟中国和英国不同，在美国拿到一个学位意味着你可以找出新的你从未听说过的课题。多数学生在最后两年之前不会选择自己的专业。多数中国学生都想学工程和财会，但是这并不意味着他们真的想学这两种专业。通常，很多人告诉他们那是那是最赚钱的专业。幸运地是他们想怎么度过自己的生活，他们喜欢做什么，他们想跟谁一起工作，对于一个职业来说，可能会有上百种选择，他们中的许多还没有被想到。

Lucky for Xiaoyi, from Hebei province, ifhe goes to the USA for university. He won’t have to choose finance or English literature until he has studiedboth courses for two years.  Unlike Chinaor the UK, taking a degree in America means you can try out new subjects thatyou have never heard of, or that you think may interest you to see if that iswhere you should major. Most students do not have to choose their major untiltheir final two years of university.

Knowing that most Chinese students say theywant to be an engineer or an accountant doesn’t mean it is what they likebest.  Too often, it is what others tellthem “makes the most money.”  For thelucky students who think about how they want to spend their life, what theylike to do, and whom they like to work with, there are hundreds of choices fora career, and many of those haven’t even been invented yet!

有很多种方法知道到哪里去上大学。排名是一个方式。对美国大一新生的研究表明，至少有10件事比排名重要。当你看到这两个专业的排名，一定要记得还有其他比排名更重要的事情。比如说那个大学是什么样子的？我认识可以发email的人么？我能上那个大学么？我付得起学费么？多少学生在那里学习和毕业？毕业生都成为了什么样的人？

There are many ways to choose where to goto university. Ranking by subject matter is only one way.  Research of freshman in America say thatthere are ten things more important than rank. As you look at the ranking of these two majors, keep in mind othermeasures that are more important, such as: What is the university like?  Do I know anyone there whom I can email?  Can I get in? Can I pay for it?  How manystudents stay and graduate (happy factor)? What becomes of the graduates?
