Sometimes the lectuer can teach a small class of 50 students in the evening for special needs of working students. (personal: my boss is a lectuer)
In contrast, an assistant professor should be a tenure-track faculty that means he or she holds a permanent job position. Besides teaching one or maximum two classes each semester, the assistant professor is responsible to conduct its own research and publish some papers in order to rank up to an associate professor.
