Drug-resistance is not only one of the clearest examples of evolution in action, it is also the one with the biggest immediate human cost.
Their conclusion that bacterial diseases might again become epidemic as a result has proved false and will remain so. That is because the decline of common 19th-century infections such as tuberculosis and cholera was thanks to better housing, drains and clean water, not penicillin.
The fact that improvements in public health like those the Victorians pioneered should eventually drive down tuberculosis rates in India hardly makes up for the loss of 60,000 newborn children every year to drug-resistant infections.
Artemisinin, a malaria treatment which has replaced earlier therapies to which the parasite became resistant – and which now faces resistance problems itself – was brought to the world not by a western pharmaceutical company, but by Chinese academics. (浓浓的美国情怀)
文章及想到的内容:
When the drugs don’t work (P9)
The article states the fact that with the widespread use of the antimicrobial medicines, human beings are increasingly exposing themselves to danger, the danger of being infected by the drug-resistant organisms.
The author believes that the underlying reasons are the following: the lack of an incentive of the patient to do the right thing, such as neglecting to complete drug courses, no incentive to create new drugs.
To overcome the obstacles, the author proposes that efforts need to be taken by various parties. Firstly, the government should ban the use of antibiotics in farm animals. Secondly, the hospital should practice better hygiene to prevent infection. Policy should also sharpen the incentives to innovate.
As for the logic of the article, I believe the suggestion part is to some extent over-exaggerated, that means, the author asks for too much. The first suggestion is reasonable, since there are successful practices in Europe countries and the forced hand of government can be effective. The second suggestion is over. You can’t enforce the operation of the hospitals, because hospitals are entities which have to earn money to survive and make decisions only if these decisions are lucrative. As for the third suggestion, I don’t think it will achieve what it is intended to do.
