Part 1: Multinational Firms and FDI
These notes are a basic review of modern theory and evidence
about what motivates firms to become multinational enterprises.
FDI refers to firms or individuals owning controlling interests in
foreign firms.
One interesting observation: there are different standards across
countries in what constitutes “ownership” (in the US it is 10% or
more). This means firms can be both parents and affiliates.
