A model of semi-subsistence agriculture recognizing the ability of farm households to hold inve,n' tories of home-grown staple foods is developed. The model's solution suggests a method for empirically distinguishing between food security and arbitrage motives for holding inventories. A formula for computing marketed surplus response is derived.
