It reminds me about the news several years ago when Bush was still US President. He said that the price of meat rising up mainly because people in India and China began to eat too much meat. These word caused huge protests in India. Yet the idea in these words is roughtly ture: when the relative product rate between the western countries and the emerging market get close, resources and the things hard to increase with technology will be redistributed between countries. It is very justify to redistribute and the emerging market should not be blamed for become more productive.

I can't catch whole picture of the reading resource, in my simple comment, high price mean non-balance amone the national trade.
In this type business cycle, holding resource country sell the high price commodity to the others to earn the cash or somewhat purchase capacity, and then they can controll and impact your finance or some relate area/

when most people talk about western and eastern economy, they forgot one crucial natural gerneral rule which is called "balance". Present temporary international balance is supply-eastern, demand-western; raw material world-eastern, africa, south amercia, high tech-western, america.etc. however,  the income, level of quality, national positions are extremely un banlance. The investement and stimulation of export will lead developing countries' economy rapidly increase, soon or later, they will dissatisfy the position where they still  are. western country, in order to keep their advantages, and their superier position, they will not allow it happen. Therefore, conflicts and struggling exist and last for a long certain while. Rising commodity prices are a permanent new feature of the new global economic landscape but it doesnt mean deflation is the feature of new global. Under  such international condition domestic situition, china should be aware of seriousness of economy. and dont not be optimistic about developing. after all, the main barriers of developing are from western countries, not ourselves.

First of all, thank you for putting a short introduction about the author. As I was shocked when I saw the name, Stephen King, I thought he was the famous American author of horror and science fiction.

In the article, my favourite sentence is "Yet with food prices doubling since 2000, and oil and metals rising three or fourfold, no one is immune."

Yes, no one is immune from this kind of dramatic raising.  It is just like a very horrified disease that nobody could run away from it. No matter you are strong(rich), you are weak (poor).  The only thing we can do is just trying all our best to find the treatment. The best treatment for this disease, otherwise it is going to be a big disaster for everyone.

This article seems to be an explaination to  that of yesterday. "This is why China is still busily negotiating bilateral deals with commodity-rich nations." And this is also why USA is busily talking with China. If American make more technology oriented products, and China lower protectionism, it will be a win-win solution. And lower protectionism is also what China want from African countries.

But I think this article is somewhat obscure. It mentions that the inefficiency usage of raw materials in developing countries such as in China and India is a cause of high price of commodity, and it also points out that the success of the emerging nations is imposing an unexpected burden on western progress, then how it can be concluded that no protectionism is good for us all?

Besides, I think "the 20th century" should be the 21th century.

I will try my best to come up with my view on this phenomena.
First of all,the increasing price of commodity most of which is bulk commodity will make more effection to emerging nations like China than to the western countries.So I would rather take consider it terrible for us than all of the world.
Second I agree the one of author's views that "supply cannot be created at the flick of a switch, particularly when agricultural land once used for food is now often being used for biofuels" we reduce the agricultural area in recent years in order to invest in frastructure and for we do not attach importance to  our farmers' behalf,  our productivity is decrease indirectly.our relying on the import food so much will cause the rising price expectation in the international market,so the grain giant must hold the food such as rice to raise price .It is the main reason why the  price is so high in my view.
It is not just a simple problem of market's operation.it is a political problem related to all of people's livehood.it's also not a problem whether go back to protectionism,it's a competition among countries.we need turn back to the balance of our economy from making GDP increase.A pressing matter of this moment is that we have to take our agriculture seriously and solve issues concerning agriculture,countryside,and farmers.

I do agree that emerging world is becoming more and more important in global economic development. Every economic research field is including emerging world in their scope. Take China as an example, you cannot point any field that China is not included.
So, everyone of us should try our best to learn what is going on in the world economy, follow them and catch them.
