A divided Congress has run out of time to raise the debt limit before Monday's deadline, forcing Geithner into an emergency reallocation of funds so the government can meet its obligations, including payments to Treasury bondholders.
"An increase in Treasury rates would make it more costly for a family to buy a home, purchase a car or send a child to college," he said. "It would make it more expensive for an entrepreneur to borrow money to start a new business or invest in new products and equipment."

U.S. such a big country, keep saying that how much responsibility they are taking all over the world. I doubt about it. Look at the way U.S. deals with the finance crises.  They really need to put their feet down and do some real work.

Treasury sectary, Geithner, together with the Obama administration, are trying to urge the congress to give approval of raising the debt limit. Otherwise, the government would  suffer a massive and abrupt cut in federal spending and aggregate demand, resulting in a catastrophe and having a heavy impact to the economy.

It is an important factor, why the bill of raising the borrowing cap is not reached, that there is a divided Congress in American. The battle over how to curb the mounting debt is a reflection of the battle between the Republicans and the Democrats.
