An owl has been issued with his own library card in recognition of his work tackling seagulls at the University of Bath.

Yoda the European eagle owl visits the campus with his handler twice a week to unsettle the gulls there. The seven-year-old is employed as an environmentally friendly method to control the population and limit any adverse effects.

Judgments on when patients are reaching the end of their lives should be taken by a number of health experts rather than relying on the medical opinion of just one doctor, according to new guidance from health officials.

The draft guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) follow the abolition of the controversial Liverpool Care Pathway – a regime that recommended the withdrawal of treatment, food and water from some sedated patients in their final hours or days – which was phased out last year after a government-commissioned review found serious failings in how it was being implemented.

A man has died and a boy has been hospitalised after getting into difficulty swimming in the waters at Three Cliffs Bay in Gower, near Swansea.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken by air ambulance to Morriston hospital, where he later died. A nine-year-old boy was taken to the same A&E unit by ambulance.

The incidence of thyroid cancer has risen over the past decade, along with a rise in obesity. We studied the role of anthropometric risk factors for differentiated thyroid cancer at the time of diagnosis and at age 20 years in a case-control study conducted in eastern France between 2005 and 2010. The study included 761 adults diagnosed with differentiated thyroid cancer before 35 years of age between 2002 and 2006. They were matched with 825 controls from the general population. Odds ratios were calculated using conditional logistic regression models and were reported for all participants, those with papillary cancer only, and women only. The risk of thyroid cancer was higher for participants with a high body surface area (BSA), great height, or excess weight and for women with a high body fat percentage. Conversely, no significant association was found between body mass index and the risk of thyroid cancer. In the present study, we provide further evidence of the role of BSA and excess weight in the risk of thyroid cancer. These epidemiologic observations should be confirmed by further exploration of the biological mechanisms responsible for the associations of obesity and BSA with thyroid cancer.

Few studies have assessed the associations between residential proximity to power plants and adverse birth outcomes including preterm delivery (PTD), very preterm delivery (VPTD), and term low birth weight (LBW). We geocoded 423,719 singleton Florida births born from 2004 to 2005 and all active power plants and determined residential proximity to the nearest power plant for each birth. Prenatal exposure to particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter for women living near different types of power plants was also determined by using National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network data. Logistic regression models were used to test the hypothesized associations. Women who lived closer to coal and solid waste power plants were exposed to higher levels of particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter compared with other types. We observed a 1.8% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.3, 2.3) increased odds for PTD, 2.2% (95% CI: 1.0, 3.4) for VPTD, and 1.1% (95% CI: 0.2, 2.0) for term LBW for each 5 km closer to any power plant. When stratifying by different fuel type, we found that only solid waste had an association with term LBW, whereas oil, gas, and solid waste all had an association with PTD and VPTD. Results were consistent when exposure was categorized by number of power plants. Our study found evidence of increasing odds of adverse birth outcomes among infants born to pregnant women living closer to power plants. More research is warranted to better understand the causal relationship.

Perceived discrimination is positively related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors; its relationship with incident CVD is unknown. Using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, a population-based multiethnic cohort study of 6,508 adults aged 45–84 years who were initially free of clinical CVD, we examined lifetime discrimination (experiences of unfair treatment in 6 life domains) and everyday discrimination (frequency of day-to-day occurrences of perceived unfair treatment) in relation to incident CVD. During a median 10.1 years of follow-up (2000–2011), 604 incident events occurred. Persons reporting lifetime discrimination in ≥2 domains (versus none) had increased CVD risk, after adjustment for race/ethnicity and sociodemographic factors, behaviors, and traditional CVD risk factors (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.36, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.09, 1.70) and after control for chronic stress and depressive symptoms (HR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.60). Reported discrimination in 1 domain was unrelated to CVD (HR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.86, 1.30). There were no differences by race/ethnicity, age, or sex. In contrast, everyday discrimination interacted with sex (P = 0.03). Stratified models showed increased risk only among men (for each 1–standard deviation increase in score, adjusted HR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.27); controlling for chronic stress and depressive symptoms slightly reduced this association (HR = 1.11, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.25). This study suggests that perceived discrimination is adversely related to CVD risk in middle-aged and older adults.

We consider in this article testing rare variants by environment interactions in sequencing association studies. Current methods for studying the association of rare variants with traits cannot be readily applied for testing for rare variants by environment interactions, as these methods do not effectively control for the main effects of rare variants, leading to unstable results and/or inflated Type 1 error rates. We will first analytically study the bias of the use of conventional burden-based tests for rare variants by environment interactions, and show the tests can often be invalid and result in inflated Type 1 error rates. To overcome these difficulties, we develop the interaction sequence kernel association test (iSKAT) for assessing rare variants by environment interactions. The proposed test iSKAT is optimal in a class of variance component tests and is powerful and robust to the proportion of variants in a gene that interact with environment and the signs of the effects. This test properly controls for the main effects of the rare variants using weighted ridge regression while adjusting for covariates. We demonstrate the performance of iSKAT using simulation studies and illustrate its application by analysis of a candidate gene sequencing study of plasma adiponectin levels.

Bayesian Analysis with Stata by John Thompson is the first comprehensive guide to employing Bayesian methods using Stata statistical software. Stata is one of the most comprehensive commercial statistical software packages on the market, but it has not developed MCMC, Metropolis–Hastings, Gibbs Sampler or other related Bayesian software as part of the official commercial package. It is not difficult to write Stata algorithms to implement basic Bayesian methods, and several programmers have performed just this in the past. However, until this book, there has been no unified presentation of how to implement Bayesian methods using Stata.

Bayesian Analysis with Stata was written for readers with little to no background in using Bayesian statistics, as well as for those having a rather extensive understanding of Bayesian methods, but who want to use Stata to implement these methods in their research. The book is not, however, for those with little experience in programming with Stata or for those without a solid background in statistical inference and probability. The author provides instruction in these areas, but it is assumed that the reader already has a fair understanding of them.

Testing a sequence of pre-ordered hypotheses to decide which of these can be rejected or accepted while controlling the familywise error rate (FWER) is of importance in many scientific studies such as clinical trials. In this paper, we first introduce a generalized fixed sequence procedure whose critical values are defined by using a function of the numbers of rejections and acceptances, and which allows follow-up hypotheses to be tested even if some earlier hypotheses are not rejected. We then construct the least favorable configuration for this generalized fixed sequence procedure and present a sufficient condition for the FWER control under arbitrary dependence. Based on the condition, we develop three new generalized fixed sequence procedures controlling the FWER under arbitrary dependence. We also prove that each generalized fixed sequence procedure can be described as a specific closed testing procedure. Through simulation studies and a clinical trial example, we compare the power performance of these proposed procedures with those of the existing FWER controlling procedures. Finally, when the pairwise joint distributions of the true null p-values are known, we further improve these procedures by incorporating pairwise correlation information while maintaining the control of the FWER.
