Motivation: Genome-wide mapping of chromatin states is essential for defining regulatory elements and inferring their activities in eukaryotic genomes. A number of hidden Markov model (HMM)-based methods have been developed to infer chromatin state maps from genome-wide histone modification data for an individual genome. To perform a principled comparison of evolutionarily distant epigenomes, we must consider species-specific biases such as differences in genome size, strength of signal enrichment and co-occurrence patterns of histone modifications.

Results: Here, we present a new Bayesian non-parametric method called hierarchically linked infinite HMM (hiHMM) to jointly infer chromatin state maps in multiple genomes (different species, cell types and developmental stages) using genome-wide histone modification data. This flexible framework provides a new way to learn a consistent definition of chromatin states across multiple genomes, thus facilitating a direct comparison among them. We demonstrate the utility of this method using synthetic data as well as multiple modENCODE ChIP-seq datasets.

Conclusion: The hierarchical and Bayesian non-parametric formulation in our approach is an important extension to the current set of methodologies for comparative chromatin landscape analysis.

When the US Supreme Court issued its ruling on the legalisation of gay marriage, there were two camps standing on front of the court building in Washington, DC.

One of two escaped killers that have been on the run from authorities in New York has been shot, US media is reporting.

A battle is brewing in Mississippi, as the growing animosity directed against Confederate symbols following the church shooting in Charleston has led to calls to remove the rebel pattern from the state's flag.

It's a battle that Greg Stewart, executive director of the Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential library in Biloxi, has fought before. And it's one he's convinced the defenders of the flag that has flown over Mississippi for more than 100 years will win again.

Sitting inside a massive, million-dollar monument to Southern history - built on the post Civil War home of the Confederate president with federal disaster relief funds provided after 2005's Hurricane Katrina - Stewart explains that Mississippi is most definitely not South Carolina.

If the national media and liberal agitators think his state is going to be quick to follow suit and renounce its Confederate heritage, he says, they're mistaken.

According to Stewart, "the stars all lined up" in South Carolina. A tragic event combined with national Republicans who wanted to defuse the debate over the Confederate flag before the South Carolina presidential primary next February.

When evaluating talent for recruitment or development, you have just two key questions to answer: What should you assess? And how?

The what question is in part context-dependent. (For example, the skills and knowledge required to be a good neurosurgeon are quite different from those needed to be a good lawyer, banker, or software engineer.) Yet you’ll also be looking for certain universal characteristics associated with effective employees, regardless of their job or role. First, you’ll keep an eye out for the best learners and problem solvers — those who have good judgment and are most able to get the job done. Second, you’ll want to know which people are most willing to work hard. And third, you’ll try to identify the ones who are the most rewarding to deal with, the most likable and pleasant in their interactions with others.

These three dimensions of employability and career success have strong links with broad psychological traits. The first relates to IQ, curiosity, and decision-making styles; the second to motivation and ambition; the third to emotional intelligence and social skills. Employees who are smarter, nicer, and more hardworking than their peers will always be in demand.

As for the how question, there has been much innovation in talent identification over the past five years, mostly as a result of the digital revolution and the ubiquity of smartphones. Although many developments are still works in progress, three approaches in particular deserve consideration because of their potential to quantify individuals’ talent and predict their future job performance:
