"spill the beans"的表面意思是“倒豆子”，但是它真正所想表达的含义是“泄露秘密”。
据说在古希腊的时候，一些组织或是社团在招募成员的时候，就是请来现有的成员进行投票，而投票的方式就是往瓶子里放豆子。

赞成就放白豆子，反对就放红豆子。此过程严格保密。

如果有人在结果公布之前，把瓶子打翻让豆子倒了出来，那么这项秘密决策就被泄露。

后来，人们就用 spill the beans 来表示“泄露秘密、机密”。

knock it off 这个表达最开始出现在拍卖行。在拍卖现场，如果场下没有人喊出更高的价格了，拍卖师就会说"knock it off"，表示这场交易已经终止。
在拍卖某物的过程中，如果没人再出更高的价钱，拍卖师就会说“knock it off”,用来表示停止这场交易。
