2011年的秋季，斯坦福大学面向全世界推出三门网络课程，人工智能，机器学习和数据库技术。课程方式为网络视频、交互式问答、网络提交作业和网络考试，题目为选择、填空或是非题。最终成功完成课程考核的学生可获得由任课教授签名的证书。参与课程学习的学生遍及世界各地，其中每门课程学习和考试的学生均达数万之多。
一位来自巴基斯坦的学生在课程论坛中写到：
I m from Pakistan .which you can call a third world country and due to my own financial problems i could not pay for my education since my father died 10 years ago. but now i work in a factory n started learning computer science after 10 hours of hard mechanical work . Here in Pakistan poor quality education is provided even the good universities and my university is even considered the lowest here. so imagine the kind of education i was getting after all my efforts . and suddenly out of no where i came to know about the Stanford courses n i got the teachings of the worlds best teachers in AI. Even my percentage is 82 % coz i can only study on the last day of the week due to my job i m very much happy for what i have learned n for me its priceless.
尽管在很多细节问题上，学生对课程有各种质疑。但从学生参与课程论坛的主动性和反馈来看，这种教学的试行无疑是成功的。
从2012年春季开始，斯坦福大学开始推出包括博弈论（http://www.game-theory-class.org/#）在内的16门网络课程。
由此，大面积的网络教学革命已全面铺开。
