Do you have a Master's Degree program?
No, we do not offer a Master's Degree program. We only consider applications for the Ph.D. program.
If I started a PhD program at another university, can I transfer my credits to UW-Madison?
Students who pass the prelims before enrolling at UW may be allowed to skip first-year coursework, with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.
How long does it take to complete the Ph.D.?
The program is designed to be completed in five years. It is not uncommon, however, for students to complete the program in six years. To learn about the goals and structure of the Economics Graduate Program visit our Program Overview web page.
What kind of jobs do your students pursue upon graduation?
Our graduates pursue research careers at colleges or universities and work for government agencies or private firms after graduation. You can find more detailed information on ourplacement web page.
What is the cultural makeup of your current student body?
There are students in the program from around the world. Our domestic students are from all areas in the US.
What is the deadline for admissions and for funding?
The application fee and the transcripts must be received by December 5 to be considered for funding. Letters must be submitted electronically by your recommenders no later thanDecember 31. Detailed information regarding deadlines can be found here. If you are interested in admissions without funding, the final admissions deadline is February 1.
How is funding awarded?
Funding is awarded to applicants on a competitive basis. Please see our funding page for additional information.
How do I apply for funding?
If your application is paid and your transcripts received by December 5th, you will automatically be considered for funding for the first year of study. Please see our funding page for more detailed information and the funding packets you would be automatically considered for if you apply on time

There are other sources of funding such asloans through the Office of Student Financial Aid, as well as sources that are external to the university (e.g. grants, fellowships). However the application process for those financial sources is not related to the process of admission to the Department of Economics. For more information visit the Graduate Student Funding Resource page and the Office of Fellowships & Funding Resources (OFFR). Those pages will contain basic information detailing the funding resources available at UW-Madison, as well as contact information for initiating a search for other sources of funding.
I am an international student. Do I need to send financial documentation with my application?
No. If you are recommended for admission by the Economics Department, the Graduate School will ask you to submit financial documentation. Information on financial documentation can be found on the Graduate School websitehttp://info.gradsch.wisc.edu/admin/admissions/financialinfo.html

After international applicants are recommended for admission by the department, the Graduate School will request financial documentation through OASIS (online application information system). It is very important that you save and refer to the original e-mail message you will receive from the Graduate School after you submit your application so you can access OASIS communication portal and respond to the request for financial documentation.
Is there a page limit on the writing sample?
No, there is no page limit and the topic is not restricted to economics. However, the average submission runs from 2 to 7 pages.
Can I apply if I have not met the math requirements? How can I know whether my courses are equal to the required courses?
Students entering the graduate program are required to have taken at least a three-course sequence in calculus, a course in linear algebra, and a course in mathematical statistics. You can apply if you have not met all the math requirements. However, all math prerequisites must be completed by the time you plan to start the program. The admissions committee will be able to evaluate your math ability more thoroughly if you have completed your math requirements at the time of application. Please remember that graduate work in economics demands mathematical sophistication of a higher order than the requirements of most U.S. undergraduate economics programs would suggest. The prerequisites above are a bare minimum, and additional background in mathematics and in graduate-level economics courses can ease the transition into the program.

For the reason above, undergraduate students at UW Madison who want to pursue graduate studies in economics are encouraged to follow one of two sets of mathematics’ courses. One would be the path that includes Math 221, Math 222, Math 234, Math 340, Math 320, and Math 421. The other one would be the path that includes Math 275, Math 276, Math 375 and Math 376. In both paths, the courses recommended for mathematical statistics are 309 and 310. In any case, it is highly recommended to take at least one course in mathematical analysis that has three semesters of calculus as a prerequisite. An example of such a course is Math 521. You can see the description of all the courses at the Department of Mathematics’Undergraduate Course Description page so you can compare them with your own courses.
While most of the material in those courses is useful for graduate work in economics, it is not always clear which topics covered in these courses are most important to review before graduate coursework begins. The Math Requirements for Incoming Graduate Studentspage, list some key topics and some useful references.

During the first semester of study, students are required to take Mathematical Economics I.Students with exceptional mathematics backgrounds may request an exemption from this course.
Do I need to have a Bachelor's Degree in Economics to apply to the program?
A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution is one of the requirements to apply to the graduate program in Economics. You do not need to have a Bachelor's Degree in Economics to apply to the program. Applicants have Bachelor's Degrees in Mathematics, Statistics, and other disciplines. For specific information on what is consider a comparable degree from an international institution please refer to the Graduate School Admission Requirements page
Can I send paper copies of my GRE or TOEFL scores rather than having ETS send the official scores directly to UW-Madison? What is UW-Madison's 4 digit ETS code?
Students must have official scores sent by ETS before admission is finalized. You may upload unofficial PDF copies of your GRE or TOEFL results on your application portal in Gradapply if you see there is a delay on the arrival of your scores. The UW-Madison Institutional code is 1846 for both the institution and the department..

How do I check my application status?
After you complete and submit your online application with the Graduate School, you will automatically receive an email from the Graduate School with your ID. Each applicant has his/her own personalized web address in OASIS (online application information system). Please save that e-mail message for future reference.
To check your application status you can always log back into your application and you will see a link to OASIS from there. You can log into My UW to access OASIS as well.
You will need to activate your NetID and password using My UW-Madison portal atmy.wisc.edu. To activate your NetID, click on the ACTIVATE NETID button located on the “My UW Madison” login screen. Enter your 10 digit student ID number and birth date. The NetID you create and password you enter are keys to your access to the MyUW portal. Make a record of it and keep it private. Follow the instructions at http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=1140.

If you are unsure about your NetID and password, contact the DoIT (Division of Information Technology) Help Desk at (608) 264-4357.
After you have paid your application fee to the graduate school, you will receive an email from the Economics Department admission portal (Gradapply). Use the link, the login, and password in that email to submit material electronically to the department.

How many applications do you receive each year?
The Department receives more than 500 applications for the Ph.D. program each year.
How many admissions are going to be offered this year?
It is not possible for us to tell you how many recommendations of admission are going to be offered this year. We have an Admissions and Aid Committee that makes all admissions and funding decisions.  In January, the committee will evaluate the applications. Once the applications have been reviewed, the Committee will decide on the number of students recommended for admission. In the past, the committee planed on an entering class of 30 students. To achieve this class size, 120-150 students were admitted. It is important to mention that for the next academic year, a smaller class is expected.

What is the profile of the average admitted applicant?
The average Quantitative GRE score for applicants admitted to the program has been 90th percentile (780-790)on the exam. The average Writing Analysis score has been 4.5. The average GPA has been 3.75.
From all the components of my admission file, are there any elements that are more important than others? Are there some elements on my application which will set me back in the eyes of the Admission Committee? Is there anything I can do to help improve my chances?
All aspects of your application are reviewed by one or two faculty members. Academic preparation is important; the committee likes to see good grades in hard courses (especially math courses or advanced economics courses). Reference letters are very important; ideally they should be written by people who know you well, and who know what it takes to succeed in a good PhD program.
The Statement of Purpose (SOP) is one of the components of your application packet.   Among other things, the SOP can highlight the aspect of your application which is strong and, if you feel it is important, you can explain the reason for any weakness in the application.
When will I know if I have been admitted?
The Economics program's admission and aid committee will inform you of its decision in March.
I received an admissions packet from the department indicating that I have been recommended for admission by the Economics Department. What does recommended for admission mean? Have I been admitted to UW-Madison?
The admission to the graduate program in economics is a shared process at UW-Madison between the department and the Graduate School. When applicants receive an admission packet from the Economics Department indicating that they have been recommended for admission, this recommendation does NOT mean that they have been fully admitted. The applicant will have to finish the last steps of the admission process with the Graduate School. The Economics Department sends admissions recommendations to the Graduate School with supporting materials. The Graduate School reviews the application and materials to ensure that the Graduate School minimum requirements are met (including financial support requirements for International Students).

It is important for applicants to continue monitoring their admission progress. Each applicant has his/her own personalized web address in OASIS (online application information system) so the applicant can submit whatever the Graduate School may request.
Do you have a Visit Day?
Yes, we invite all students who have been recommended for admission to visit the department in late March or early April. If you have been recommended for admission, please contact us atgradpro@ssc.wisc.edu if you would like to arrange for a visit at a different time.
I have been admitted to the PhD program at UW. Can I defer my admissions for one year?
It is not possible for students to defer admission.  You will need to apply again.  We'll keep your files and the fact that you were admitted the previous year may be considered.
What is the reapplication process?
To reapply, you must follow the current process of admission.

You will need to submit a new statement of purpose, an updated transcript if you have taken additional courses since your last application, and new letters of recommendation. Remember to visit the department admission portal (Gradapply) if you wish to update any of the materials we have on file from your previous application.

If you are reapplying, the login and password will be the same as the first application forGradapply. If you do not have it anymore, you will need to contact us after you have paid the application fee at gradpro@ssc.wisc.edu with login and password as the subject. If you are required to submit a TOEFL score, please be sure the score has not expired. Scores are accepted if they are within two years of the start of the admission term for which you are applying. GRE scores are accepted up to 5 years after the test date.
Can I consult with faculty so I can get further input as to how I could strengthen my application?  What are my chances of being admitted and funded?
Every year the Department receives more than 500 applications for the Ph.D. program.Admission and funding is competitive and it depends on a number of variables including all aspects of your application and the applicant pool.  In January, the Admissions and Aid Committee will decide on the number of students recommended for admission. Given the volume of applications, it is not possible to respond to inquiries about the chances of admission, or to provide information about strengths and weaknesses in individual applications.
Who do I contact if I cannot find an answer to my question on the webpage?
If you cannot find the answer to your question above, you can read the Graduate School frequently asked questions (FAQs) for more information. You can also contact us atgradpro@ssc.wisc.edu

This is at the program's discretion. Please contact the Academic Program directly.

What if my letters of recommendation are stored at a file service (a career service center) and are sent out by request?
Contact your academic program to inquire if this method is acceptable.

    • Requirements

I am currently pursuing my bachelor degree. Can I still be considered for admission?
Yes, but degree requirements must be completed before you begin enrollment as a Graduate student.

Will my post graduate credits/degree transfer from another institution to UW-Madison?
Your academic program may decide to use course work completed at another institution toward fulfillment of department course requirements. This work will not appear on your UW-Madison transcript. The Graduate School's minimum requirement can be satisfied only with courses taken as a graduate student at UW-Madison.

I am an international applicant. My degree is not called a bachelor degree and it is not graded on a 4.0 scale. Can I still apply?
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor's degree, with a strong academic performance comparable to a "B" or above average grades. The Graduate School views your overall performance using your institution's grading scale. Please do not convert your grades to a four point scale. Degree, academic documents and language requirements vary by location of your undergraduate institution. For specific information select a country from the list below.

Who should I ask to translate my documents into English?

Your school should provide an official translation; otherwise have a translation done by your school or an official translator. In some countries these people are also notaries. Do not submit an evaluation from a credential evaluation service in lieu of a translation.

    • Testing/GRE/English Proficiency Tests

What if I can't take the GRE prior to the specific deadline for the application?
The GRE is a program requirement. Please contact the academic program you intend to apply for.

Will a paper copy of my GRE scores be considered 'official'?
No.  Official scores must be sent from ETS to UW-Madison via electronic transmission (institution code: 1846).

I previously applied and had my test scores sent. Are they still valid? The GRE is a program requirement. Please contact the academic program to which you intend to apply.
The English proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB) is required by the UW-Madison Graduate School. Test scores are accepted if they are within two years of the start of the admission term.

    • Residency

I am an international student who will be living in Wisconsin. Do I select "Yes I am a resident" in the Residency Section?
No. If you are not currently a resident of Wisconsin, you should select "No".

How do I qualify as a resident for tuition purposes?
Residence for tuition is governed by Wisconsin Statute 36.27(2), which states that with few exceptions one must be a bona fide resident of Wisconsin for a full twelve months, without attending any college or university, to qualify for resident tuition. However, if you graduated from a Wisconsin high school and your parent(s) are Wisconsin residents, or you are a dependent on a parent’s taxes, and have a parent who is a bona fide resident of Wisconsin, or you, your spouse, or someone you are a dependent of on taxes, recently moved to Wisconsin for full-time employment, the statutory twelve months might be waived. More information can be found at http://registrar.wisc.edu/residence.htm.

    • Wisconsin - Minnesota Reciprocity

I'm a resident of Minnesota. Do I select "Yes I am a resident" in the Residency Section?
No. If you are not a resident of Wisconsin, you should select "No".
A tuition reciprocity agreement exists between Wisconsin and Minnesota. This agreement stipulates that residents of Minnesota can attend Wisconsin institutions in approved programs and be assessed the approved reciprocity tuition rate, plus segregated fees assessed all students. Students in the professional programs of the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, however, are not covered under the reciprocity program.

Minnesota residents must apply to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education (MOHE) for verification of their eligibility for reciprocity.

Please check the Registrar's website for more information on Reciprocity.

  • Processing Your Application
    • Admission Process

      What is the admission process?
Processing time depends upon when you apply, when your file is complete at the academic program and when the program's admission committee meets.

The admission process is as follows:

      • Your application data is entered into a central database. You receive an email acknowledgement regarding receipt of your application and fee (this email includes information about your campus ID and how to activate your online application status check).
      • The academic program(s) to which you are applying has a faculty admission committee review your application and materials.
      • The academic program makes a recommendation for admission to the Graduate School Admissions Office.
If you are not selected for admission, the program will notify you.
      • The academic program to which you have applied will forward supporting materials to the Graduate School's Office of Admissions for review.
      • The Graduate School's Office of Admissions reviews your application and materials to ensure that the Graduate School minimum requirements are met. (Includes financial support requirements for International Students).
      • The Graduate School makes the final admission decision.
      • Your residency (Wisconsin resident or non-resident) is determined by the Office of the Registrar's Tuition Residency Counselors.
    • Checking Your Application Status

How do I check the status of my online application?
Use the email link you received after you submitted your online application or go to MyUW.  Enter your net ID and password.  In the upper left corner is the Graduate School status check.  Click "Enter" for more information.

What if I do not receive the link to check my status after I submitted my application?
The link to set up your MyUW account and net ID is sent automatically after you submit your application. The submission process is an overnight process, so expect your email within 24 hours. It is very important that you set up your MyUW account to check your application status.

If you do not receive this link, please contact webapp@grad.wisc.edu.

Why does the online status check show that my test scores were not received?
It may take up to four weeks for scores to be sent to UW-Madison.   If any information on the test is different from the information you provided on your application (family name, surname, birth date or gender), the test scores may not match to your application.  You should contact the Graduate School if this is the case at gradadmiss@grad.wisc.edu.

My status check indicates that I must provide notarized documents. What does 'notarized' mean?
To notarize your signature, an official witness can be a bank official, government official, accountant, lawyer, commissioner of oaths or anyone that is in the official capacity to authenticate signatures.  The official notary seal or stamp must denote the position the official witness holds.  A signature stamp or chop mark will not be accepted.

    • Requesting Application Changes

How do I add, change a program or make a correction after submitting my application?
Email the UW-Madison Graduate Admissions office with your request: gradadmiss@grad.wisc.edu  They will determine whether or not a change can be made.

How do I update/correct my mailing or email address?
Log into the MyUW portal.  Enter your netid and password.(use the links underneath netid and password if help is needed.) Click on the "Student Center" link.  Click on the information you would like to change, then edit.   For assistance contact our Division of Information Technology athelp@doit.wisc.edu.
Also, please make your academic program aware of the change

Can I change the term that I originally applied for?
Your admission is only valid for semester indicated on your letter of admission from the Graduate School. You can request a change of session for your application if the new semester is an adjacent semester. You can only request a change of session one time without a new application form or application fee. The program will consider your application again. You are not guaranteed admission for the new semester. To begin this process, contact the Graduate School or your intended program.

To be considered for a semester that is not an adjacent semester from when you originally applied, you must start over with a new application and new application fee. You can do this online.

    • Transcripts/Academic Records

I am an International applicant. I have only one transcript/academic record. Do you accept photocopies?
The Graduate School can begin processing with photocopies if they are legible with appropriate stamp(s)/signature(s) of a school official.

Where do I send my transcripts/academic records?
All transcripts/academic records should be sent to the program to which you are applying.

How do I order UW-Madison transcripts?

    • Enrollment Issues

When do I enroll for classes?
Newly admitted graduate applicants will receive an 'invitation to enroll' email from Enrollment Servicesapproximately six weeks prior to the start of classes.

      When do classes begin?
      Check the Academic Calendar.

    • ESLAT Requirements

Why have I been required to take the ESLAT?
An admitted applicant with test scores are less than those listed below must take an English assessment test on arrival at UW-Madison.
TOEFL: 92 for internet (IBT) and 580 for paper test
      MELAB: 82
      IELTS: 7
Depending on your score you may need to register for a recommended English as a Second Language (ESL) course(s) in the first semester you are enrolled.
Note: Academic Programs may ask any admitted graduate applicant to take the English placement test and ESL course after he/she arrives if English proficiency is in doubt.

    • Missing Academic Records

I don't have a transcript with a degree posted. When do I submit my final transcript?
The Graduate School requires that an official final transcript which includes the bachelor degree (or equivalent) and date conferred be received by the end of the third week of classes.

I am an international student. I am required to submit my official academic documents to the UW Graduate School. When do I do this?
When you arrive on the UW-Madison campus, go to the International Credential Evaluators office, Room 228 Bascom Hall. Please bring the required documents with you. We will make copies here and return the originals to you.

I am an international student. When I check my status, a 'hold' has been placed on my enrollment. What does this mean?
When you were admitted to the UW Madison Graduate School, some academic documents were missing.  The 'hold' prevents future enrollment but will not affect the term you were admitted. To remove this hold, you must present the documents that were requested in your online status check.

    • Residency Requirement

I've been admitted. Why has my 'Residency Decision' not been determined?
The determination may not yet be complete.  After you have been admitted by the Graduate School, the Office of the Registrar's Tuition Residency Counselors determine if you are a Wisconsin Resident for tuition purposes. This does not affect your admission.
