Computex ’12: A Win-Win situation?
„ Input: company visits and “hands on” devices experience at Computex
Key focus was the nearing release of Windows 8/NT and propagation of ultrabook
PCs. The range of devices was somewhat dazzling, a good thing for the overall
TAM, but at the risk of perhaps confusing the consumer. Post some temporary
softness in late 2Q/early 3Q, we retain a positive bias on PC demand in 4Q12/’13.
„ Windows 8 vs. Windows RT (ARM): Game is on
We saw multiple Windows 8 devices on both Intel Ivy Bridge and Clover Trail.
Those included notebook/ultrabook PCs, convertible PCs (360° rotation of
display), transformer tablets (with docking keyboards), tablet PCs and All-In-Ones
with tablets. In addition, we confirm that all three selected ARM-based application
processor vendors had Windows RT demos (and for Nvidia a finished product) up
and running – and rather smoothly. This leaves us more positive on Nvidia
(upgraded to Buy). We continue to expect simultaneous Win8/RT releases.
„ Intel strengthening its grip on the supply chain
We saw Intel announcing supporting touch panel capacity ramp (for >13 inch), a
good thing as Win8 sans Touch is, to us, slightly inept. Intel is also pushing
composite (cheaper) casings. Progresses is being made in storage, with 7mm hard
disk drives (with dual SSD or embedded NAND flash) ramping up.
„ Output: Neutral on Asia Tech and Global Semis
Most Preferreds: ARM, Broadcom, Catcher, Hynix, Intel, Lenovo, Micron,
Qualcomm, Quanta, Samsung, Skyworks, Synnex. Least Preferreds: Compal
Elect., Diodes, HTC, Imagination, Intersil, International Rectifier, Largan, SPIL,
Simplo, Sigma.
