Two Nobel Laureates joined the Economics Department of CUHK
The Economics Department of the CUHK is the only department among all universities in Hong Kong that has two Nobel Laureates among its staff.
Sir James Mirrlees, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1996, joined the Economics Department of CUHK in 2002. He was a pioneer in many new areas of economics, including the economic theory of incentives under asymmetric information, optimal income tax, moral hazard, and mechanism design.
Professor Robert Mundell, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1999, joined the Economics Department of CUHK in 2009. He is known as “Father of the Euro”, and he was a pioneer in many areas of economics, including the theory of optimal currency areas, theory of the monetary and fiscal policy mix, and supply-side economics.
Both Nobel Laureates have participated in teaching the undergraduate or graduate classes of the Department. They are also active in research and in public lectures.
