English Channel: US Stock Slipped A Little Bit After Sandy.

I was expecting US stock turned much lower when Wall-Street opened today after two-day halt due to Sandy. But it was not that bad and both indexes of DJIA and S&P 500 just slipped a little bit. I know it should be a boost for construction and hardware companies, but a big bumpy for insurance companies and banks. So what was your expections for the US stock market due to the storm?

The determinant factor influencing stock indexes may be investors' confidence. Although Sandy caused severe damage to infrastructure and residential houses, it doesn't harm manufactures too much. Insurance companies may suffer a lot, but I don't think banks will be influenced too much.

Partially agreed. you said that investor's confidence determine the stock indexes, and I have the same idea. But in America, individual investors take a great part in the stock market i guess. So, the trepidation among the individual investors may turn the stocks lower. Besides, some other social problems like unemployment may increase the anxiety, leading to much greater influence.

I agree with what you said. However, the truth now is that the unemployment rate dropped below 8% recently, which means a better perspective for investors, even though it may be just a result of statistical game. Compared with better performance of American economy, Sandy's influence may not play a very important role in the stock market. That's why some indexes only drop a little, and may re-rise soon.

the labor market has been recovering in New York, in short time, due to Sandy. lots of public facilities was destroyed. the rebuliding of those facilities needs a large number of labors, which will promote the employment.

1\ Techs lead the increase2\ Conventional company like Walmart and Visa Inc gains steady growth
The average gain last year of my 5 US stocks is 16%. Just the average :)

I am more than agree with the former arguments. But I want to stress the infulunce of the entity economy, or the macro economy. They play a key role in the process that determine the stocks price. Just as mentioned before, the employ rate, the consumer's confidence, and even the government's policy. Monetary policy, such as QE, could have caused a lot of so called "hot money" pour into the stock market, which can greatly rise the price.
