大问题很好，但是必须细化

1）specify your research Q, "the effect of income on divorce" is different from "the effect of divorce on income"

2) your research design,  "the effect of income in 2010 on divorce event in 2010" is kind of cross-sectional study; "the effect of  average income from 2000 to 2010 on divorce event in 2010" is kid of retrospective study........

3) unit of analysis: population or individual? 我看到你提到“离婚率”，这是在群体为研究对象时，采用的一个term. 当然，你可以研究，
a.以每个州里的女性适龄工作群体作为研究对象，来研究“effects  of averages incomes on divorce rates"  
b.或者，加州在职女性为样本，观察她们income in individual level 和 divorce event的发生

PS： 什么是你的控制变量，你应该从文献中找，each variable in your model should be evidence-based or be supported by a theoretical framework

depent variable: divorce or not,binary value;
independent variables: what you want to add

sample: includes all types of women, whether they divorce/married

try to control different marriage status, income difference before and after divorce, etc

finally, do a inver-causality test: test whether income changes are results of divorce or the cause

我觉得，除了计量方法的讲究， 还是多找找 关于 婚姻经济学 的理论知识。
