【本期主题】PoliticalConnections, Controlling Shareholders and Post-IPO Performance of China’sListed Companies

We examine howpolitical connections influence long term performance of these Chinese firmsafter being listed in the stock market. Our paper develops Fan et al. (2007)and investigates the effects of political connections on corporate performanceunder different types of controlling shareholders. We find that political connectionsactually bring about better corporate performance in the long term, ifcontrolled by the family shareholders, although the effects of politicalconnections are insignificant in government controlled firms. Furthermore,political connections in family-controlled firms are associated with betteraccess to bank loans, tax rebates, and government subsidies. We argue thatpolitical connections can be a substitutefor investor protections and even be a channel for government patronage underpoor institutional environment.

田利辉老师是FT全球连年排名第一的伦敦商学院毕业的金融学博士，密歇根大学经济学博士后，曾于1997年获得中国律师执业资格。他曾任美国国际金融管理协会学术组织委员会成员、香港ZF大学资助委员会项目专家顾问、伦敦商学院访问教授、中国《财经》杂志客座研究员，曾为英国科学院研究员，曾主持韩国HeraldBusiness (韩主要经济日报之一)“Tian's Talk on China”专栏。2007-2012年入选美国《世界名人录》(Marquis Who's Who around theWorld)。他的主要研究领域包括公司理财，资本市场，投资银行，经济转轨等。他关于中国公司治理、企业绩效、国有产权、资本结构、发行上市等若干篇英文论文引用较广，曾荣获“全球金融学会最佳论文奖”、“亚洲金融学会最佳论文奖”、“中国金融年会优秀论文奖”和“中国制度经济学年会一等奖”等荣誉。田教授的国有股权论文目前名列Journalof Comparative Economics引用率前十名，IPO论文曾列Journal of Empirical Finance下载阅读率第一名，在国内《经济研究》、《管理世界》等刊物也多有独撰论文发表。
