Tourists havebeen evacuated from one of the most iconic bridges in Paris after it began tocrumble under the weight of thousands of 'love locks'.

　　A chunk of thePont des Arts bridge fell away on Sunday night and the police were called toseal off the area which remains closed today.

　　It is a popularcustom for tourists to secure a padlock to the bridge branded with their namesas a romantic gesture, with Kourtney Kardashian and boyfriend Scott Disick alsoindulging in the tradition.

　　But the weight ofthe locks is damaging the metal Ponts des Arts, which was originally completedin 1804 but rebuilt in the 1980s following damage in the two World Wars.

　　A local Frenchpolice spokesperson said: 'A metal grille had fallen inwards, rather than intothe river. If it had landed on a passing boat, the results could have beendisastrous.

　　'As it happened,nobody was injured. The bridge was evacuated, and will now be closed untilMonday morning at the earliest.'

　　It has becomecommon practice for visitors to buy a padlock, attach it to a bridge, and thenthrow the key into the river, in Paris's case the Seine.

　　A spokesman forthe City Hall said: 'If the tradition continues to grow in popularity andcauses too much damage to the city's monuments, solutions will be considered ina bid to address the problem.'

　　The pedestrianPont des Arts, which links the Louvre Museum and the Institut de France, is anexact replica of one designed by Napoleon Bonaparte's architects in 1802.
