Over 800 retired orange trees have been planted along the road in Nanchang, the capital of eastern China's Jiangxi Province to create more pleasing urban scenery.

At the beginning of the year, Nanchang's municipal bureau in charge of landscaping bought nearly 20,000 fruit trees that had been phased out by fruit-growers in the suburbs to decorate the city, local newspaper Information Daily reported on Tuesday.

Fruit farmers often chop down and burn fruit trees ' when their productivity decreases markedly, so Nanchang's effort is a good move toward environmental sustainability.

The first 800 trees were planted along Changnan Avenue. With few pedestrians, the trees will enjoy a sound growing environment. Now, most of them are thriving, and some are even blossoming, Huang Yuesheng, an official from the bureau, said.

Large-scale popularization of this greening method will start next year, the article said.
