China supports more than one-fifth of the world’s population on just 7% of the world’s arable land. It is no small feat that China has so far managed something close to grain self-sufficiency. However, this has been achieved by offering subsidies to peasants to sow grain despite the fact that in many parts of the country, farm size and population density would make fruit and vegetable farming a more lucrative option.
