Joe Cheng did a great job in starting day 1 and making us all proficient users of reactive and observe functions, and more importantly when to use which (hint: you should always use reactive, except in the couple of cases when you shouldn’t). After lunch he was followed by Winston Chang who showed us linked brushing, Hadley Wickham who showed us shiny Gadgets and Jeff Allen who walked us through deployment options for shiny apps. If that all wasn’t enough we were further inspired by how others were using shiny in practice; I was particularly impressed by Ricardo Bion who talked to us about how AirBnB are using shiny for prototyping dashboards.

But it was definitely the gadgets that I wanted to try out in the coding time that followed. If you haven’t seen gadgets before these are essentially small shiny apps that can be built to help perform analysis, as opposed to presenting results of analysis. As with all things from RStudio it was really quick and easy to get started with and I was pleased to say that it only took me a couple of hours to go from never having touched gadgets to having a gadget in a package that integrated with the addins available in the beta version of the RStudio IDE.(Sorry to everyone at Mango who are now going to have to listen to me telling them “We should make a gadget for that” for everything).

如果外汇投资者此前还有所疑问，上个月人民币汇率上演的那场跌宕起伏的大戏到底属于什么性质的话（是一场打闹？抑或是一场小型冲突？），那么眼下执政的中共已为它定了性：这是一场战争。

上周，中共党报《人民日报》在头版刊发标题为《向中国货币宣战？“呵呵”》的社论，警告对冲基金经理乔治•索罗斯(George Soros)别打人民币和港元的主意。

两周前，中国央行通过大举干预使空头成本高企，狠狠地教训了空头——所以它或许认为自己已经笑到了最后。

然而，中国央行当时的目标是离岸人民币汇率，该汇率走弱当时正在向在岸投资者发出危险信号，从而引发人们对日益严重的资本外逃的担忧。过去一周，离岸汇率却再次走软。


在讨论与各国央行的交手时，交易者使用猫鼠游戏的比喻和使用军事比喻一样多。他们指出，在汤姆和杰瑞(Tom and Jerry)的卡通世界里，老鼠杰瑞不需要杀死汤姆；他只需要让汤姆心烦意乱，然后养精蓄锐伺机再战。

中国央行一度暂时消除了受到严格管制的在岸人民币汇率和离岸汇率之间的价差。中国央行购入人民币的干预行为，使得借入离岸人民币的成本飙升至闻所未闻的水平，从而重创人民币空头（空头被迫轧平头寸）。

但是空头就像老鼠杰瑞，他们并没有被一网打尽。上周，对冲基金潘兴广场(Pershing Square)的比尔•阿克曼(Bill Ackman)向投资了该基金的客户表示，他仍在做空人民币。

“你告诉我目前美国还有哪家对冲基金没在做空人民币？”一名常驻亚洲的策略师称，“他们都不得不做空人民币，因为他们的投资者期望他们这样做——即使他们不确定接下来会发生什么。”

关于中国应该、或者说可以采取什么行动，人们提出了各种各样的建议：从让人民币来一次幅度超出市场预期的“一次性”贬值、到关闭离岸人民币市场。

然而，人们认为，中国央行下一步最有可能采取的举措不会是以上任何一种。导致离岸人民币汇率与在岸汇率首次出现显著价差的，正是中国央行去年夏天让人民币贬值的举动，按照中国央行的设想，那次贬值原本应该就是“一次性”的。

关闭离岸市场并非不可能，但是实施起来会很棘手，并且可能存在政治风险。多年来，离岸市场一直被用来促进人民币在海外的使用、鼓励跨国企业以人民币借债。

对跟踪人民币走势的人士而言，眼下最值得关注的可能就是本月由中国主办的二十国集团(G20)财长和央行行长会议。分析师猜测，由于没有国家希望看到人民币大幅贬值、或是中国的举动再次在全球市场上引发类似1月份的那种波动，会议可能会发布联合声明，以表示国际社会对人民币的支持，从而对投资者产生威慑作用，阻止他们继续做空人民币。

还有另外一种可能性：美元可能会为人民币当救兵——如果美联储(Fed)承认（或许是在3月的议息会议上）自己今年不太可能像之前预计的那样加息4次的话。

与此同时，交易者在寄希望于即将到来的农历新年假期能够抑制本周和下周的交易活动。在岸市场将休市一周，离岸交易中心香港将休市3天。

中国央行近日似乎正赶在假期开始前向市场注入额外的流动性（规模较以往假期前更大），以防范资本外流造成的流动性枯竭。

但是，一些投资者警告称，假期期间做空人民币并不安全。去年十一黄金周前，中国央行曾利用节前流动性稀薄的机会出其不意地进行干预，摆了离岸空头一道。有时，汤姆也会让杰瑞意想不到。

The empirical likelihood inference for semi-varying coefficient models for panel data with fixed effects is investigated in this paper. We propose an empirical log-likelihood ratio function for the regression parameters in the model under α-mixing condition. The empirical log-likelihood ratio is proven to be asymptotically chi-squared. We also obtain the maximum empirical likelihood estimator of the parameters of interest, and prove that it is the asymptotically normal under some suitable conditions. A simulation study and a real data application are undertaken to assess the finite sample performance of our proposed method.

Summary

The rise in healthcare expenditures has raised doubts about the sustainability of health systems and instigated a discussion on their design. Policy making in this field requires a proper understanding of how healthcare expenditures evolve throughout an individual's lifetime, and of how they vary between individuals. Given the lack of data on healthcare expenditures during an individual's lifetime, we developed a new nearest neighbour resampling approach to construct realistic individual life cycles of healthcare expenditures based on cross-sectional data from the Netherlands. This approach provides insight into lifetime healthcare expenditures. Our main finding is that the inequality in lifetime healthcare expenditures is much smaller than the inequality as derived from cross-sectional healthcare expenditures.
