Emerging Stars to ‘Surviving Stars’! That literally marked the theme of the 4th Annual Emerging Stars
Conference hosted by IDFC-SSKI. A recessionary global environment, increasing capital crunch and
weakening demand scenario – coupled with ‘new age scams’ – was just the ‘perfect’ environment for
hosting the ES conference on February 5-6 at The Trident, Mumbai. As expected, the mood was far more
somber from the 200-odd investors as indeed the 30+ corporates. However, bear-primed investors got an
opportunity to go back to brass-tacks, which was facilitated by corporates/ entrepreneurs that were now
looking at survival with growth becoming a dream-wish! Our takeaway is that with the exception of a few,
pressure points in terms of near-term performance are likely to show up given credit uncertainties and
demand headwinds.
Growth an option; Survival a necessity!
Agri/Consumer: The challenge is to maintain and sustain growth momentum
Banks: Second tier banks would need to recapitalize themselves to protect relatively fragile balance sheets
Infrastructure: Slow track growth of private projects while government contracts save the day
Pharma: Challenges to drive growth in an uncertain global market; risk appetite seems to be diminishing
Media: Leadership getting fragmented, to lead to pressure on advertising yields and thereby profitability
Metals: Achieve further cost competitiveness as global environment seems precariously poised
For the remaining: Just survive!
