Southeast Asian ride-hailing startup Grab said Tuesday it has raised 750 million dollars in a funding round led by Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp., increasing its firepower to battle Uber Technologies Inc.
The Singapore-based company said it would use the funds to continue to expand its offerings across Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, where it also faces competition from motorcycle-hailing app PT Go-Jek. SoftBank, which was an early investor in Grab, led the new funding round. Grab said its available capital has risen to more than 1 billion dollars after the latest round of fundraising.
Grab, which has up to 1.5 million daily bookings, offers private car, motorcycle, taxi, and carpooling services in six countries and 31 cities in Southeast Asia. The company plans to invest significantly in GrabPay, its mobile-payments platform.
