A meta analysis (Deci, Koestner, Ryan, 2000) “confirms that virtually every type of expected tangible reward made contgent on task performance does, in fact, undermine intrinsic motivation”. Apart from tangible rewards, some external events such as threats (Deci, Cascio, 1972), deadlines (Amaible, DeJong, Lepper, 1976) and competition pressure (Feev, Deci, 1996), which typically eintail negative pychonological experience, also tend to undermine intrinsic motivation.
