For our applied example, we rely on the published data from the Carolina Abecedarian Project and the Carolina Approach to Responsive Education (Ramey, Gallagher, Campbell, Wasik, & Sparling, 2004), which can be accessed online (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR/studies/4091). In this randomized controlled trial, young children were assigned to either a control group or to some early childhood intervention, which started at 6 weeks of age and lasted until the third year of elementary school.
