The French government yesterday suspended planned fuel tax increases in a bid to defuse violent protests by the so-called gilets jaunes movement that have shaken the authority of Emmanuel Macron, the president.

Edouard Philippe, prime minister, announced a six-month moratorium on the tax rises, scheduled for January 1, after meeting governing party MPs.
