每每音乐响起,海豚便会随着音乐的节奏翩翩起舞,面带笑容----这是大自然最高深的骗术,让我们以为它们沉浸在幸福之中。然而每年在世界各地的海洋馆都有许多小海豚因抑郁或精神压力过大而患上胃溃疡,甚至“自杀”。

有悖逻辑的是,为何日本政府会绞尽脑汁在这样一个濒临衰退的捕鲸业上,况且他们比谁都清楚鲸类体内超标的汞含量和其对人体的危害?这位前多米尼加代表在访问日本之后得出了这样的结论:日本的行为出于一个诡异的原因(another peculiar reason)——帝国主义思想的残留(remainence of a traditional notion of empire), 日本政府渴望在捕鲸上面扳倒西方,不在听西方世界的摆布。这样的举动甚至可以从纳税人那里得到补偿和支持。扭曲的民族自豪感,使地方的百姓乐于接受Taiji政府免费发放海豚肉甚至将海豚肉加入日本中小学生强制午餐的计划。
让他转变的,是他一手带大的Cathy的死。“我能感觉到,她那时的心情极度抑郁。她游到我的臂弯里,注视着我,然后自杀了。因为海豚和人类不一样,它们不是自主呼吸,每一次的呼吸都是受控制的有意识的行为。而当时,Cathy深吸了一口气之后,再没有吸第二次。我放开她,她就那样,腹部朝上,慢慢的沉入池底。”
