Why do emotions exist in a competitive rational world ? Robert Frank starts by
presenting a collection of counterexamples to the explanation of the behaviour
of man as the result of a pure, consciously optimising calculus. Phenomena like
altruism, love or fairness are rather difficult to explain within a very narrow
concept of selfish rationality. Alternative explanations of such behaviour might
be to consider it simply as pathological or to explain it by sociobiological
