Abstract: The paper argues that productivity and sustainability are interwoven and that they should be pursued together. The paper defines productivity and sustainability and discusses both issues in historical perspective in Africa. It then analyses the choice of technology for pursuing productivity and sustainability in African agriculture. Finally the paper moves beyond technological considerations to discuss the policies and institutions that are required to sustainably intensify African agriculture.
