Workshop Statistics: Discovery with Data, A Bayesian Approach (Second Edition)
by James H. Albert (Author), Allan J. Rossman (Author)

Editorial Reviews
Review
From the reviews:
THE AMERICAN STATISTICIAN
"Albert has done a very smooth job of writing his half of this book so that it flows with the original Rossman chapters. His chapters of the book have the same playful, and highly readable, approaches to learning statistics that have made the Workshop Statistics series so popular for introductory statistics courses where minimal mathematics ability is needed. His examples and problems are ones that a typical college student would find interesting…If you are an instructor of a class that either has been using the Workshop Statistics series, or is contemplating doing so, but have wanted a Bayesian approach, then this text is for you. This text is highly enjoyable, reads fluidly, has a pace suitable for undergraduates with minimal mathematical abilities, and covers the basics of Bayesian analysis in a way that the students will be able to follow without becoming confused by the many complicated algebraic methods behind introductory statistics…Overall, this a very excellent addition to Workshop Statistics series, and one that will make people who have wished to introduce Bayesian methods to all undergraduate students very happy. It is highly readable has excellent problems, and Allen Rossman and James Albert’s Web site include solutions to the problems, sample syllabi, sample exams, datasets, Minitab programs and macros, Java applets and a guide for instructors. Even if you do not feel that this text is suitable as the main text for your introductory course I would recommend a copy as a reference, or as a lab manual, as many of the examples and problems are suitable activities for any introductory class."

"This new book in the Workshop series presents introductory statistics in a Bayesian framework. The approach … provides students with the opportunity to explore ideas and discover results with minimal influence of the instructor. … Each topic is accompanied by several activities, five or six of which are to be used in class and the rest for homework. … Overall, this is a welcome addition to the books available for teaching introductory courses from a Bayesian perspective, especially while teaching to a general audience." (Mark C. Greenwood, Technometrics, Vol. 44 (3), 2002)

This is an excellent book. Its lab-style approach with practical / tangible sets of data coupled with on-target follow-up questions makes this a wonderful book to teach and learn from. This version of the textbook focuses on using a TI-83 calculator to organize, display and analyze data in most of the problems. Managing the data lists for the TI-83 calculators in class can be difficult. I recommend that you ... download the program files that Al Coons put together. He placed all the individual data lists for each problem into programs. This makes it easy to manage and transfer these files to other calculators. Especially between TI-83+ and TI-83 calculators. Solutions to the "Activities" problems and various supplementary materials can be downloaded.... I recommend using Adobe Acrobat to download the "Activities" solutions. I made the mistake of using an old web-browser and wasted a whole summer copying and pasting. This may sound obvious, but it must be stressed....Answer all of the problems that you plan to work on in class or assign for homework prior to the actual class. Some problems require advance preparation or data collected from previous class activity problems. You need to find this out before walking into a classroom. This is the first time that I've taught an AP-Statistics course and the approach of this book takes a little getting used to. I'm having a ball! I rely heavily upon this book and the Barron's AP-Statistics study guide. Good Luck. It's a great book!

I used this book in my AP Statistics class my senior year of high school. The Workshop Statistics book was really easy to follow and understand. I have always had a hard time with math, but when I used this book, I picked up on the concepts quicker. The only problem I had with this book is the fact that explanations of the formulas and procedures were not expained as clearly as I would have liked. This book is also a great way to orient yourself with your TI-83 scientific calculator (Texas Instraments).

I read this book during my senior AP Bio class. My Biology teacher yelled at me for reading it during her class. So I left, because I didn't want to be yelled at. I then received a detention. Then I couldn't do my statistics homework and I failed the class. The book was stimulating if somewhat bland. I am writing this in a Starbucks in Toronto.
