nominal ，ordinal ，categorical这三个变量有什么区别？

正看一篇英文文献，出现了以上三个词，不知道具体什么意思，不是表示离散变量么？

Both nominal and ordinal data are categorical. The ordinal data have rank order, but the nominal data don't.

为什么还要对nominal变量排序？这样做有什么意义？
