􀂄 Input: proprietary survey of 100 CIOs (60 US / 40 Europe)
CIO respondents are more pessimistic since our 1Q survey with expectations for
NTM budgets down 170bps to -1.3% y/y, likely owing to increasing macro fears.
However, adjusting for survey demographics (where a greater % of respondents
were from slower growth industries), we think low-single-digit IT spending growth
is still likely, driven by a corporate hardware/software upgrade cycle.
􀂄 Hardware: servers/storage a priority / Networking: Cisco gains mindshare
Consistent with our checks, servers and storage remain top priorities among CIOs
and results indicate a generally improving view of the enterprise refresh. In
networking, results were more favorable for Cisco and Juniper vs. HP. The
Cisco/EMC/VMware JV was viewed as best-positioned for data center upgrades.
􀂄 Software/Services: shifting spending to the Tier-1 providers
In software, CIOs expect to spend more this year with Microsoft, VMware, Citrix,
SAP, and Oracle. In services, CIOs were more bearish on the spending outlook and
responses suggest integrated vendors that provide multiple IT offerings (e.g., HP &
IBM) are likely to receive a greater share of services spending going forward.

Our preferred names that are likely to benefit from improving enterprise spending
trends in servers, storage, and software include EMC, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft,
NetApp, Oracle, Salesforce.com, and VMware. Least preferred enterprise-focused
names include Paychex & Wipro.
