This paper will present a contingency model for designing organiza- tions for innovation. The objective of this paper is two-fold: to sum- marize the literature on designing organizations for innovation to pro- vide a basis for practicing designers to improve innovative capabilities of their organizations, and to provide a model of the design of innova- tion organizations that can provide direction for future empirical inves- tigation. In this discussion specific focus will be placed on the design dilemma that different organization structures seem to be appropriate to the initiation and implementatidn stages of the innovation process. The implications of this design dilemma will be discussed and specific strategies for implementing different organization structures for deal- ing with the initiation and implementation stages will be presented.
