Stories that reflect the major principles . it is a metaphor revealed  major life 's principles .that is ,   If you want to surpass the obstacles in your life in order to head for the destination of Truth, Virtue and beauty, you should also have the wisdom and courage to renounce your ego. like the stream ，the protagonist  of this story , river and vapor have the same innner nature . if you want to succeed , you must konw what's your inner nature , sometimes , change your stubborn initial opinion , maybe you can find a surprize .

i agree with the author's suggest . you can try asking yourself these questions: What is my inner nature? What is it that I cling to? and What is it that I really want? really. we often miss ourselives . we don"t know who we are ,what is it i cling to ,and what is it i really want . if these three decisive questions can't be understanded , how we can surpass the obstacales in our life ?how to evaluate our achievement ?

in my opinion , we must clearly understand the answers to these questions .so we can have a definite destination which we really persue. only this can't be enough , we must have wisdoms ,confidencies ,persisitences ,and courages . then ,we can achieve the real success !

To find who I am is a tough question and we always spend the whole life to to pursue my ego.When we study,work hard , we should slow the pace thinking if i still on my way to 'destination'.
We sometimes lost or be misleaded,but we must have faith and courage to renounse the present myself for reaching the final goal of my life,the ultimate meaning of my life.

I doubt that why the river has to listen to what the desert said. According to information asymmetrics, the desert might get some insider information that the river could become vapor in order to accross the desert. However, due to the Efficient Market Hypothesis(EMH), the reality in the desert shows that no any other river has tried to use this way to accross the desert. It means that 1,it might have great risk of doing this so other rivers failed to do that, or 2, it is completely a new information so the river is the only one who get the info.
In the firsr case, the desert should explain the detail of risk and return to the river as it has the fiduciary duty, otherwise, the river could report to regulator.
In the second case, the river should pay the desert for the insider information about how to accross the desert. Of course, the regulatior may investigate this "transaction", the river and the desert may get the punishment.
