Google Is Buying Motorola

Crazy news just in—Google is acquiring the handset division of Motorola, Motorola Mobility, for $12.5 billion. This means Google could soon officially in the hardware business.

Could, because the deal has to pass regulatory scrutiny from governments around the world plus the eyeballs of Motorola's shareholders. But should that all clear, this is a big, big deal. From the press release (below), "the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business." HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG and the other Android manufacturers must be quaking in their boots today. That said, despite offering 32 phones—21 of which have Android baked in—Nasdaq pegged Motorola with a paltry 3% market share as of the beginning of this year. Not exactly a commanding force. Then again, that was before Google was at the reins.

• Google putting out its own hardware makes things super awkward for Google's Android partners, and could be the best thing that ever happened to Windows Phone. Samsung, HTC, et al, are going to need another avenue of attack, since Motorola branded products are going to theoretically have a major advantage, even if Google insists they're going to have to compete like every other phonemaker.

Why does google take this merging policy? I think there are several reasons.
First, Android is not the only ecosystem in the market, and gradually some mobile handsets are taking other system as an alternative. Maybe google wants to control the terminal market directly with more initiative, not just counting on other hardware manufacturers’ choices.
Second, Motorola is not so strong as 10 years ago. Some divisions have made great losses and were closed. But it is still the largest one that operates on Android system, although with a paltry 3% shares in total market. It’s a good time for google to take over Motorola as the combination is helpful to both.
Third, competition from the alliance of Microsoft and Nokia shows a large threat to google. The rest of the handset manufacturers are free to choose Microsoft’s WP7, and who knows what the next choice will be? Google may take the precaution before the partners switch to other directions while still keeping Android open right now.
What will happen in the next decade? Let’s wait and see.

There is no question that Google is betting on mobility as the future of computing. The purchasing price  shows that Android is a strategic priority to Google with respect to its core business.

谷歌最后会不会向苹果学习，将硬件和软件都搞成自己独家的？还真很难说，也许前一阵子苹果市值成为全球第一刺激了谷歌。谷歌的目标再也不是微软，而改成苹果了。

such acquisition really put google's paterner in a awkward situation, even though google emphasis it will not influence the android business. it's obvious google can own the handset  patents needed to compete with apple after the deal.
