Executive Summary of
Key Findings
This paper arises from the research programme into the Determinants of the Birth, Growth
and Survival of Small Businesses at the Small Business Research Centre (SBRC),
Cambridge University. The SBRC consists of an interdisciplinary group of researchers
drawn from three University Departments, Applied Economics. Geography, Land
Economy, and the Judge Institute of Management Studies. The Centre is supported under
the ESRC Small Firms Initiative by contributions from the ESRC, Barclays Bank,
Commission of the European Communities (DG XXIII), Department of Employment and
