Squash new bank fees

1 of 10

"Like any business, a bank has to produce enough revenue to cover its costs," said American Bankers Association spokeswoman Carol Kaplan.

Here are nine pesky fees that are out there waiting to suck your account dry. Now you can squash them flat.

Forgetting to update your address

2 of 10

Moving? Don't forget to tell your bank. You could be hit with fees if your statement gets sent to your old address.

"When you're in the process of changing your address, your financial institutions should be at the top of the list of who to notify," said Greg McBride, a senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

U.S. Bank, for example, charges a $5 fee for the second and subsequent months that a statement is undeliverable. While some of the other megabanks don't charge for returned mail, many regional banks do.

"There are costs to handling returned mail, including the costs to try to track down new addresses so that important financial information gets to the customer and not someone hoping to engage in identity theft," said Nessa Feddis, vice president and senior council at American Bankers Association.

Those costs must be pretty high. FirstBank & Trust, Bank of Arkansas and Bank of Oklahoma charge undeliverable mail fees of $15. BankAtlantic charges a fee of up to $5.

And if your balance is low, fees like these could cause you to overdraft your account -- spiraling into a slew of extra charges.

Cashing in your coins

3 of 10

Many banks have machines that count your coins and allow you to redeem them for cash. But the service doesn't come cheap -- at least not anymore.

Last November, TD Bank began charging customers a 6% fee for non-customers who use its "Penny Arcade" machines.

If you've collected at least $1,000 worth of coins, Capital One will charge you 5% of the amount, if you're not a customer.

"Coin-counting fees at many banks run at 5% or more. You can access a home equity line cheaper than that," said McBride. "It's complete nonsense to pay anything for coin counting, so roll them all up in coin rolls first if that's what it takes."

But Feddis said banks incur costs to buy and maintain the coin machines and exchange it for cash.

"It is like renting any machine," said Feddis. "Otherwise other customers who don't bring in money to be counted are subsidizing those who do."

Talking to a human teller

4 of 10

Talking to humans face-to-face is so 2010. At least that's the philosophy at some banks.

Customers enrolled in Bank of America's e-banking account pay $8.95 a month for the privilege of accessing branches and talking to tellers when you need to make a transaction or deposit. But you can avoid this monthly maintenance fee by receiving online statements, enrolling in direct deposit and using ATMs to get cash.

At Capital One, branch support isn't available for online banking customers. If an online banking customer stops for help at a branch, they will be connected to the bank's online support team -- by phone.

At PNC, if you call a customer service representative to make transactions instead of doing it online, you're charged a fee between $2 and $3.

But most banks usually offer some type of account that gives you free access to tellers.

"Banks offer consumers different choices -- in fees and services -- based on individual preference and habits," said Feddis. "Those who choose an account with a fee to engage a bank employee usually get compensated with higher interest rates or other free or low-cost services."

Losing your debit card

5 of 10

When you misplace your credit or debit card, you not only put your money at risk from thieves -- you'll also need to pay your bank to replace it.

"There are costs associated with providing debit cards, not just for creating the piece of plastic, but for the security measures involved," said Feddis, adding that cards must be sent separately from the PIN.

At Bank of America, it will cost you $5 to get a replacement debit card.

If you need a new card right away, it costs $20 for a rush. An expedited card costs a total of $25 at TD Bank.

Chase also charges customers $5 to replace a debit card, while PNC charges a $7.50 debit card replacement fee, or a $25 expedited delivery fee.

"There's some cost for replacing a card, but it's not $5," said McBride. "Plus, by virtue of the customer having and using the card, it's generating revenue for the institution -- so this fee can be high on the annoyance scale."

Getting a paper statement

6 of 10

Not comfortable with online banking? Get over it. Many banks are now charging to send old-fashioned paper statements.

You'll pay an extra dollar a month to get paper statements when you bank with TD Bank. Customers who enroll in online banking are given a $1 discount on the monthly maintenance fees attached to their checking account.

U.S. Bank charges customers who opt for paper statements up to $2 a month on some checking accounts.

And with so many people preferring to bank online these days anyway, McBride said computer-savvy customers should make sure to opt in to electronic statements to avoid the extra fees.

"It's kind of like the difference between getting an e-ticket or having a paper ticket mailed to you for air travel," said McBride. "If you reduce the cost for them to mail you paper, they'll reduce the cost for you."
