The income statement
The numbers on the balance sheet will change from one period to the next. The majority of this movement is driven by the financial performance of the entity. Financial performance is captured in the income statement. It is the income statement that presents an entity`s ability to generate income and incur expense. The net result of income less expenses is profit or earnings. The type of profit (earnings) is dependent on the nature of the expenses deducted against income and is presented at a number of different levels:
- EBIT (earnings before interest and tax)
- EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation)
- EBITADR (earning before interest, tax, depreciation, amortsation and rent)
- PBT or EBT (profit, or earnings, before tax)
- PAT or EAT (profit, or earnings, after tax)
The various profit metrics will be discussed as we examine the income statement in more detail. However to understand the income statement, we must understand the components - the last two fragments of financial statement DNA - income and expense.
