Summary: Growth in Research in Motion BlackBerry, Nokia 9xxx and Pocket PC shipments is offsetting declining Palm OS and proprietary PDA shipments, resulting in renewed PDA market growth. There are eight PDA vendors that have been consistently selling more than 100,000 units per quarter on a worldwide basis: Research in Motion (RIM), Palm, HP, Nokia, Dell, T-Mobile, Acer and Mitac/MioTech. RIM’s software licensing efforts and its smartphones could slow growth in the BlackBerry PDA business if RIM gets more traction in its licensing efforts. However, RIM and HP continue to dominate enterprise PDA purchases, and Dell’s direct model may inhibit PDA sales to consumers, many of whom desire some hands-on experience before purchasing. Erosion of the PDA market by increasingly capable cellular phones will be the major factor in slowing growth of worldwide PDA shipments to 17.5 million units in 2009, an average annual increase of about 7 percent.
