To show the changes more clearly, we can calculate thelogarithm of real GDP and plot real GDP on a logarithmic scale as follows: 3.png

1929-1933    Great Depression      

1941-1945    World War Ⅱ      

1950-1953    Korean War      

1961-1973    Vietnam War      

1973      Oil Crisis – First oil price shock      

1979      Energy Crisis – Second oil price shock      

2011      911 attacks      

2007-2009    Financial CrisisThe second plot is more informative.

Because real GDPmeasures the value of goods and services at a constant set of prices and wouldnot be influenced by changes in prices, real GDP provides a better measure ofeconomic well-being than nominal GDP.

By comparing annual data of consumption and GDP, we can find thatconsumption and GDP are changing in the same trend.
