Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of the Earth Institute, spoke at Columbia yesterday with Jonathan Ledgard, African Correspondent at The Economist, about the crisis in Darfur.

"The coming decade brings opportunities to cut world poverty by half. Billions more people could enjoy the fruits of the global economy. Tens of millions of lives can be saved," said Jeffrey D. Sachs at the Simon Fraser University President's Forum on October 7, 2005. "The practical solutions exist; all that is needed is action."

This dialogue examined progress on the United Nations Millennium Goals and the leadership required to respond to poverty in Africa and Asia. These goals will form a significant thematic context for the UN World Urban Forum to be convened in Vancouver in 2006.

In an effort to make strides in international development, the UN set targets in key areas such as poverty alleviation, reduction in child mortality, promotion of gender equality etc. to be completed by the year 2015. What is the logic behind the MDGs? Are they attainable by 2015? And what plans are in place for institutions and governments to work towards attaining the MDGs?

Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University and Special Advisor to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, told World Bank Group staff on March 22 that 2005 is a "pivotal year" for development, "the last chance we have to get the Millennium Development Goals on track."
