i saw the proc nlin example but in i don't know how to set the initial parms

Here is a trick you can play with nlin. See  below,

1) Suppose your data is generated by
a=0.5123; b=0.72135;
y=a*(1-exp(-b*x));

2) a and b can be recovered with proc nlin.

data t1;
a=0.5123; b=0.72135;
x=0.3;
y=a*(1-exp(-b*x));
output;
x=0.731;
y=a*(1-exp(-b*x));
output;

run;

proc nlin data=t1;
parms a=1 b=1;
model y=a*(1-exp(-b*x));
run;

The regression error is zero as expected.
