Hung Changtai, 1990; War and Peace in Feng Zikai's Wartime Cartoons
[Feb, 7th; Morden China]

Well, it has absolutely nothing to do with Economics. Rather, it's a historical essay about the cartoons of Feng Zikai. The author Hung is a professor of HKUST; his course is well-known to be strict and tough, even auditing prohibited.

From this paper, we may know some background of this popular cartoonist, his training as an artist in Japan, his mentor Li Shu-Tong (or monk Hongyi), his adoration of Tang-Song poems, and the success of Yuanyuan Studio (緣緣堂).  The subject concern of this paper is the change of style in Feng's cartoons from prewar period to the anti-Japanese war period. In face of the national tragedy, as well as his own, Feng's formerly peaceful, aloof, child-loving cartoons (see figure 1-2 below)  were forced into withdrawal. He took part into artists' united movement to use cartoons to awaken national conscience, and fight for the victory of China. Some of his paintings in this period, consequently, present crucial and horrible images (see figure 3-4 below), as the reality was too crucial and too horrible.

But Feng never admitted the superiorty of the propaganda function of cartoons. Owing to his Buddhist feelings and senses, love and peace are always the heart of Feng. It wasn't animosity towards the Japanese, but the longing for peace that motivated Feng's war painting.
