There is a movie (about Jobs) which I strongly recommend you to enjoy.
To put it simple: his lackage of R&D cost control drove major investors crazy.

The CEO you mentioned was actually hired by Jobs himself.
Ironically, the guy was a key player in the upper process.

No one could answer this question.
At least, Apple survived and held on till its second best moment.
