The assignment:
Choose an economic, business or finance article (story) from an internet or paper source (e.g.
Financial Times – http://www.ft.com, Forbes – http://www.forbes.com, The Times –
http://www.business.timesonline.co.uk, http://Bloomberg.com, or any other economics source)
that can be analyzed with the knowledge of microeconomics.
Basing on this piece, present your analysis in written form. The paper should include:
• as an introduction, a brief description of the problem mentioned in the article,
• description of parties involved (companies, government etc.),
• market or markets that story refers to (relevant market description: geographic and product
scope, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relevant_market for more),
• your own analysis using methods and concepts of microeconomics: demand, supply and
equilibrium (for price changes in the market), elasticities, costs, optimal production (for
both price taking and price making situations), price strategies for price making situations;
graph are very welcome,
• conclusion.
Your essay should not include the utilization of whole microeconomics knowledge. It may, for
example, refer to some event that led to price changes – all you can use in such situation is
equilibrium analysis (possibly supplemented by the knowledge of various elasticities). However,
the more complex and interesting story you choose and the analysis you perform, the higher will
be the mark.
There are, of course, certain requirements for your paper. It should not exceed 5 pages. It should
be delivered printed and formatted according to certain rules1. Any deviation from the
requirements will automatically disqualify the paper.
Proper citations are obligatory. You should attach the article (printed or copied) you are basing
your essay on.

A4 paper, 2cm margins, 1,5 line spacing.
Serif font (Times New Roman for example), 12 pts, justified.
Title and headings 14 pts, bold.
