The multivariate approach considers all dependencies between all variables observed in an epidemiological study, without the need to declare one outcome variable as a function of one of more “predictor” variables (the multivariable approach). Using Bayesian Graphical modelling and capitalizing on the power of modern computing, freeing the epidemiologist of such an assumption of how the variables are related allows many more potential model structures to be explored, a great aid to understanding complex disease systems.
