A rock-paper-scissors enthusiast who has no background in game theory wants to organise a large rock-paper-scissors tournament. The basic format will be as follows: Each round our organiser randomly matches people into pairs and each pair play the rock-paper scissors game. If one player wins, that player receives £1 from the losing player. If the players draw then no money changes hands. This procedure is then repeated until 1000 rounds are played, where each round the pairings are drawn completely randomly and independently of each other. Although our organiser has not yet decided on two organisational issues: how many people to invite and whether to allow time for players to discuss past strategies with each other between rounds. Discuss what predictions non-cooperative game theory and evolutionary game theory make about how participants will play. What strategies do you expect players will play in practice and how does this fit in with the theory? Your answer should be written in language accessible to the layperson and mention what impact, if any, the two undecided organisational issues would have.
