If you think MatLab is too expensive or you like to use free, and open-source software, I highly recommend Octave.  This is the best alternative matrix-computational software to MatLab.

The plotting is not easy under windows. I don't know it under linux.
Another stuff is the toolbox. The functions in Octave is too few. If one is used to MATLAB, it is not easy to write scripts under Octave because some functions are missing.

I also tried scilab and it seems to be better under windows
