1. Academic is NOT the only placement for a PhD, but a large proportion of PhDs did end up with academic careers. The revealed preferences of PhD candidates vary from person to person. Also, Most PhD programmes are targeted for academics, not tailored for IB. Anyway, when you apply for a PhD, you, at least, should have "some" interest in research work.......otherwise life is long, and hard....
2. There is a blur line between academics and practitioners. Sometimes a professor might be Head of XXXX in JP Morgan, and sometimes a manager say Head of Alternative Investments would offer a course in a biz school. Professor Chen Zhiwu, for instance, even set up a hedge fund of his own.
3. Except for a few roles/positions, such as researchers, quants (rocket scientists) in BACK OFFICE, a Bachelor or Master is enough for IB. PhDs might be perceived to be "over-qualified" in this case.
On the other hand, if you'd just like to be a researcher, a quant..... a PhD in a quantitative subject is almost a must.
4. To get into, or rather, to excel in IB, WHO you know is much more important than WHAT you know (your degree, skills, talents....)
