A wild goose chase 从字面上翻译是“追赶野鹅，而大部分情况都追不到”，所以这个引申的含义也很好理解，指的是“白费力气，徒劳”，a hopeless pursuit or foolish search after something that is in fact, pointless.
据说这个短语最早出自莎士比亚的《罗密欧与朱丽叶》当中，马库修将他和罗密欧之间机智的笑话比拼比做“追野鹅”, 在那个时候，这个词指的是莎士比亚时期的赛马比赛。
发音
我们在读这句话的时候，要注意句子的不完全爆破，it，out, wild 末尾都会进行不完全爆破，读的时候是 i(t) turned ou(t) to be, will(d) goose.
